Today, Nicolas Almagro who is ranked #20 in the world beat Robin Soderling to win his sixth ATP tennis championship title. Almagro took the match in three sets (7-5, 3-6, 6-2) on the clay courts in Båstad, Sweden. After losing the second set, Almagro won the third set in simple fashion, taking the final four games of the match.

For his win, Almagro takes home €72,150 in prize money, and adds 250 ATP rankings points. For Almagro, this is a big win which improves on a decent first half of 2010. With his win, Almagro improves to 22-10 on clay, and 33-17 on the season.

For the home town hero Soderling, it’s a disappointing loss for a man who made it to the finals at the 2010 French Open and also broke a 12-match losing streak to Roger Federer. For the last three years, Soderling has made a steady climb up the rankings, and win here would have been been great for Sweden, as well as Soderling’s confidence moving forward.

Next up for the ATP tennis tour: International German Open in Hamburg, Germany. This is a clay court tournament that begins tomorrow, July 19th. Scheduled players include Almagro, Ferrer, Davydenko, Monfils, Melzer, and more. Nikolay Davydenko won this tournament in 2009 and looks to defend his title.
