As always, the 2010 Wimbledon tennis tournament is going to be the biggest tennis event of the year.

6-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer will try to defend his 2009 title against a field of players that includes a healthy Rafael Nadal. Serena and Venus Williams have won seven of the last nine Wimbledon titles, making them the favorites again in 2010.

2010 Wimbledon Betting Preview

Men’s Betting

Roger Federer’s dominance of Wimbledon is well-known, and the sportsbooks have him listed as the favorite. However, Federer is by no means a lock to win this year. Roger got bounced in the quarter finals at the 2010 French Open by Robin Soderling, a player he had beaten twelve times in a row. Does this mean that Roger is done? Of course not, but it does mean that Roger can no longer be penciled into the semi-finals of every Grand Slam tournament.

The biggest threat to Federer’s title defense this year comes from Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Nadal had an injury prone season in 2009 but you may recall that he ousted Federer in 2008 for the Wimbledon title that year. Federer may be the king of grass, but Nadal has already proven that he is capable of usurping the king.

Nadal and Federer faced off once already this year in Madrid, where Nadal took the win. Despite the advantages of playing at home on a clay court, this victory shows that Nadal is back to full form. Sportsbooks are still giving Federer the benefit of the doubt but Nadal is worth a serious look for all you futures bettors.

With all the attention on Rafa and the Fed Express, it’s easy to forget that there are several other hopefuls who are perfectly capable of pulling upsets. Andy Murray, Andy Roddick, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Novak Djokovic are all in the running for a Wimbledon title. Even so, I’m not planning on putting any significant money on any of these players. There’s just too much competition from the field, capped with a likely final round match against Federer or Nadal.

Women’s Betting

The women’s Wimbledon championship will also provide fans with plenty of thrills. Serena Williams and Venus Williams are favored by tennis bookmakers but both women have a tough lineup against the likes of Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova. Sportsbooks are accepting bets, and women’s 2010 Wimbledon betting is already underway.

Kim Clijster’s physical game is a major threat to both Williams sisters and makes her a solid underdog bet on the women’s side. She defeated Venus this year at the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open, which shows that Kim cannot be taken lightly. On the other hand, the Williams sisters dominate the grass courts of Wimbledon like nobody else.

Justine Henin has already stated that she wants to win a Wimbledon championship more than any other Grand Slam event. She has adopted a more aggressive style in an effort to beat the Williams sisters on grass. Unfortunately for Henin lovers, her new approach has yet to prove itself against a Williams sister in 2010. Henin has been playing great tennis, though, and the 9/2 odds she’s receiving at Bet365 are looking pretty tempting.
